Funeral services for Iona W. Winterhof, 94, of Aurelia, will be Wednesday, May 4, 2016, at 11:00 A.M., at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Aurelia, with Pastor Larry Lemke officiating. Burial will be in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, rural Aurelia. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M., with the family present, at the church. The Redig Funeral Home in Aurelia is in charge of arrangements.
Iona Wilhelmina Stratmann was born on February 28, 1922 at Hampton, IA, the daughter of Carl and Emma (Dohrmann) Stratmann. She attended rural school in Franklin County, seventh and eighth grade at St. Paul Lutheran School in Latimer, and then attended high school and graduated from the Latimer High School in 1939. Iona went on to attend Iowa State Teachers College and Concordia Teachers College in River Forest, IL. She taught rural school in Franklin County from 1940 – 1943, and at Immanuel Lutheran School in Palatine, IL, from 1943 – 1946.
On June 30, 1946, Iona married Orville Winterhof at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Latimer. She was an active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Aurelia, where she taught Sunday school and was a member of LWML. She and Orville farmed in the area before moving into Aurelia in 1974. From 1972 until 1987 she worked in the bakery of the Cherokee Hy-Vee store. Iona was a member of the Sunset Knoll Auxiliary and the Aurelia Golf Course for many years. Her greatest joys were her family, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Iona died Saturday, April 30, 2016 at the Cherokee Specialty Care at the Villa in Cherokee, IA.
Preceding Iona in death were her parents, one son, Dean Winterhof on April 26, 2005, and one sister and her husband, Norma and Darrel Borcherding.
Survivors include her husband Orville of Aurelia, two sons; Craig and his wife Patti Winterhof of Denver, CO, and Brian and his wife Lorri Winterhof of Cherokee, and four daughters; Elaine Meyer of Cherokee, Janet and her husband Dan Whitney of Aurelia, Joyce and her husband Ken Bahrke of Panora, IA, and Marcia and her husband Gary Klett of Everly, IA. Also surviving are 21 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren, one sister, Elna and husband Kenneth Keehn of Hampton, IA, one brother, Arnold and wife Lois Stratmann of Hampton, nieces and nephews, and other relatives and friends.
