Graveside services for Bonnie Shank, 93, of Spencer, formerly of Aurelia, will be 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, April 1, 2014, at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, rural Aurelia, with Pastor Bruce Rapp of the First Congregational Church in Aurelia officiating. Visitation will be from 1:00 until 2:00 at the Redig Funeral Home in Aurelia.
Bonnie Evone Mummert was born on October 16, 1920, the daughter of John Quincy and Lola Margeret (Stutz) Mummert at Aurelia, Iowa. She attended Aurelia Elementary and graduated from the Aurelia High School in 1940. During her junior year she was named “Miss Aurelia” and represented Aurelia at the Clay County Fair in Spencer. Upon graduation Bonnie relocated to Los Angeles, CA, where she worked as a retail cashier during the war. Bonnie married Wayne Coates who died during WWII. Bonnie then returned to Aurelia to help with her parents’ hardware store.
On November 14, 1947 Bonnie married Merlin Eugene “Sport” Shank in Aurelia and they moved to Sheldon where they managed the Sheldon Golf and Country Club for several years. In 1952 their son Mark was born. In 1954 they moved to Spencer where Bonnie worked for many years at Dr. Frink and Schlictemeiers office and later was employed at the Woman’s Shop and the Clay County Fair ticket office until she retired.
Bonnie died Sunday, March 30, 2014 at Longhouse Residence Nursing Home in Spencer.
Preceding Bonnie in death were her parents, her first husband Wayne Coates, her second husband Merlin “Sport” Shank on June 20 1998, two sisters; Geradine Mummert and Donna Taylor and her husband Jim, brother-in-law Orlo Shank and his wife Mabel, and sister-in-law Gladys Roseman.
Survivors include her son Mark Shank and his companion Karen Bishop of Spencer, one niece, Donna Rae Furlong of Sioux City, and other relatives and friends.
