Dolores Marie (Murr) Sprouse age 95 of Aurelia and Fostoria, passed away at the Accura Health Care nursing home in Aurelia. A private graveside service will be held at a later date with Redig Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Memorials will go to St. Croix Hospice.
Born July 21, 1928 in Odebolt, Iowa, Dolores was the first born of six children to Arthur and Rose (Werkmeister) Murr. She was baptized at home. She attended school in Odebolt.
On February 5, 1949 Dolores married Joseph Sprouse in Odebolt, Iowa. Together they had six children, Connie, Diane, Nancy, Larry, Mark and Michael.
Dolores was a stay at home mom while the children were growing up. She later went to work as a cook in the Aurelia school lunchroom. (We often thought it was just to keep an eye on us kids). She also worked at a small bakery, run by a good friend, Jane Witcombe, in Aurelia.
Dolores was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Aurelia, Ladies Aid, and VFW Auxilary. She was a Boy Scout Den Mother to her boys for a few years, an avid gardener of both flowers and vegetables. She loved to cook and canned much of the gardens produce. She passed on her many skills, especially gardening and cooking. Her children often came home from school to the wonderful smell of homemade bread or cinnamon rolls.
Later she and her husband Joe enjoyed taking many trips, with family or friends. Joe passed away May 26, 2005, and she continued to live in their home in Aurelia. As her health started to fail, she moved in with her daughter, Connie and husband Mark, in Fostoria, where she enjoyed living her last years there until moving to the nursing home January 24th. She loved to watch sports on TV. She was able to watch the Super Bowl and have a small Corona beer, (that her son-in law got her hooked on) and a pizza party with her children (that we will all remember with big smiles) just a little over a week before her passing.
She was known to many as a kind, giving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She enjoyed a good bargain, and a long conversation. When it was time to say goodbye, it was never quick, there was always more to say. So Mom, we all say goodbye….and until we meet again.
