Funeral services for Jessie J. McGuire, 81, of Cherokee, will be 11:00 A.M. Monday, April 3, 2023 at the First United Methodist Church in Aurelia, with Pastor Linda Morris officiating. Visitation will be Sunday from 2:00 until 4:00, with the family present, at the First United Methodist Church. Burial will be at a later date at the Afton Township Cemetery, rural Cherokee. The Redig Funeral Home in Aurelia is in charge of arrangements.
Jessie Jean Rees was born January 13, 1942, the daughter of Eli and Irene (Bolger) Rees at Carroll, Iowa. She attended country school and graduated from the Coon Rapids High School in 1960. In November of 1959 Jessie married Dewey Betts. They had two children, Bradley and JoEllen. In 1973 Jessie became a federal meat inspector. Jessie and Dewey divorced in 1980. On March 19, 1983 Jessie married Dr. Edmund R. McGuire, DVM, at Hanover, IA. Jessie remained a meat inspector until her retirement in 2001. Jessie was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Aurelia, church circle, and Red Hats. She enjoyed gardening, traveling, and canning.
Jessie died Wednesday, March 29, 2023 at Accura Healthcare in Aurelia.
Preceding Jessie in death were her parents, husband Dr. Edmund R. McGuire on May 25, 2017, and two brothers; Thomas Rees and Richard Rees.
Those left to cherish her memory are her son Bradley and his wife Joni Betts of Sioux City, IA, daughter JoEllen and her husband Fred Yohnke of Ida Grove, IA, and four grandchildren; Dr. Jessica Albers, Matthew Jensen, Paige Betts, and Jordan Betts, one sister, Ann Beach of Redfield, IA, and one sister-in-law, LaVonne Rees of Tacoma, WA. Also surviving are three step-children; Michael McGuire and children Samantha and Abilene, Chad and wife Peggy McGuire and daughter Margaret, and Jill and husband Ryan Johnson and children Evan and Carson, nieces and nephews, and other relatives and friends.
