HATTIE PEEKENSCHNEIDER

Funeral services for Hattie Peekenschneider, 91, of Cherokee, formerly of Aurelia, will be 10:30 A.M. Thursday, September 6, 2012, at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Aurelia, with Pastor Larry Lemke officiating. Burial will be in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, rural Aurelia. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Aurelia. The Redig Funeral Home in Aurelia is in charge of arrangements.

Hattie Cora Sprouse was born February 24, 1921, the daughter of Art and Nina (Nelson) Sprouse on a farm northeast of Galva. She was educated in the Galva area, graduating in 1938. She worked for many families until she married Lester Virgil Peekenschneider on March 19, 1942 in Omaha, NE. On May 27, 1962 Hattie and Lester adopted Lyle Calvin. Hattie worked at Elsie’s Café in Aurelia, then provided care for many people in their homes. In 1974 she began as a Home Health Care Aid, retiring in 1990. She continued caring for family and friends as a volunteer. She moved to Cherokee in 1989. She enjoyed gardening and canning fruit and vegetables. She enjoyed having family at her house for meals on Sunday and holidays. She liked the cooking and baking and having family around her.

She was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church, where she was a member of the Ladies Aid and taught Sunday school and vacation Bible school.

Hattie died Monday, September 3, 2012, at Country Side Estates Nursing Home in Cherokee.

Preceding Hattie in death were her parents, husband Lester on September 27, 1995, two sisters, Viola and husband Albert Peterson and Mary Sprouse, and one brother, Joe Sprouse.

Survivors include her son, Lyle and his wife Nancy of Waterloo, five grandchildren, David, Susan, Jean, Scott, and Dean, great-grandchildren, sister-in-law Delores Sprouse of Aurelia, many nieces and nephews, and other relatives and friends.
