Funeral services for Timothy Coombs, 60, of Aurelia, will be Friday, June 18, 2010, at 10:30 A.M. at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Aurelia with Pastor Larry Lemke officiating. Burial will be in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, rural Aurelia. Visitation will be Thursday from 2:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M., with the family present from 5:00 to 8:00, at the Redig Funeral Home in Aurelia.
Tim died Monday, June 14, 2010, at the VA Home in Des Moines, Iowa.
Timothy Oren Coombs was born November 14, 1949, the son of Oren and Marian (Patten) Coombs in Cherokee. He graduated from the Aurelia High School in 1968. On January 5, 1969, Tim married Carol J. Ballantyne. He worked for Wilson’s Foods from 1969 to 1975. He and Carol lived on the farm until 1975. He was confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church on March 27, 1977. Tim farmed and raised sheep for several years. He drove semi and worked for Brower Construction in Sioux City. In 1984 he joined the U.S. Army where he served in Desert Storm. An accident resulted in his medical discharge from the service, returning him to Aurelia where he raised horses on the farm with his mother for about 15 years. During this time he attended North West Community College where he received his degrees in heavy equipment and carpentry. Tim coached Little League, played softball, enjoyed deer hunting, and loved his horses. His unfortunate bout with Alzheimer’s led him to nursing homes in Sioux City, Remsen, and Aurelia. Eventually he was transferred to the VA Home in Knoxville, IA, and he currently lived at the VA Home in Des Moines.
Preceding Tim in death were his father Oren on November 26, 1996, two half-sisters, Jane and Lois, half-brother Dan Coombs and his wife Ruth, and half-sister-in-law Grace Coombs.
Survivors include his mother, Marian Coombs of Aurelia, his children, Todd and his wife Ashley Coombs of Hutto, TX, Trampis Coombs of Storm Lake, Trent and his wife Dawn Coombs of Cherokee, and Taralyn Coombs of Burnsville, MN, his grandchildren, Trever, Tayler, and Tanner of Marcus, Tatum and Teagan of Hutto, TX, Tim and Tyler Jones of Cherokee, Trinity of Cherokee, and Treanna of Burnsville, MN. Also surviving are three brothers, Tony and his wife Rhonda Coombs of Alta, Terry and his wife Cathy Coombs of Sioux Falls, SD, and Tracy and his wife Deb Coombs of Alma, WI, one half-brother, Robert Coombs of Benson, AZ, one half-sister, Gloria Lansford of Santa Maria, CA, and several nieces and nephews.
