Memorial services for D. Leon Ling, Jr., 87, of Alta, will be at a later date. There will be no visitation. The Redig Funeral Home in Aurelia is in charge of arrangements.
Leon died Friday, January 1, 2010, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake, Iowa.
Don Leon Ling, Jr., was born March 18, 1922, the son of Don Leon Sr. and Myrtle (Plummer) Ling in Portland, Maine. He graduated from the Deering High School in Portland in 1940. Leon served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945. On June 9, 1945, Leon married Wilma Mae Madsen at the Lutheran Church in Newell, IA. Leon served as a Nebraska State Trooper for 15 years, worked for Melander’s in Alta for 20 years, and for Merrill Manufacturing in Storm Lake for 19 years. They had lived in Alta for more than 40 years.
Leon was a member of the Baptist Church in Alta, and the Pomegranate Masonic Lodge also in Alta.
Preceding Leon in death were his parents, his wife Wilma on October 9, 2009, infant son Daniel Ling, one sister, Evelyn Crawford, and one brother, Edward E. Ling.
Survivors include his son, Tom Ling and three grandchildren, Kristen and her husband Neil Nelson of Polk City, Aaron and Tyler Ling, of Glenwood, and one great-grandson Koy Nelson, and several nieces and nephews.
