Memorial services for Lorne R. Gano, 63, of Alta, will be 11:00 A.M. Thursday, April 10, 2014, at the First United Methodist Church in Aurelia, with Pastor Thomas Petersen officiating. Inurnment will be at St. John’s Cemetery in rural Peterson at a later date. The family will be present for visitation on Wednesday from 4:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. at the First United Methodist Church. The Redig Funeral Home in Aurelia is in charge of arrangements. A memorial fund has been established.
Lorne Roger Gano was born February 10, 1951 in Cherokee, Iowa, the son of Lowell and Ruby (Anderson) Gano. Lorne attended elementary school in Larrabee, IA and graduated from Aurelia High School in 1970. On November 6, 1970 Lorne united in marriage with Christine JoAnn Bonham at Grace Lutheran Church in Storm Lake, IA. Lorne enlisted in the National Guard in 1971 and was honorably discharged in 1979. He was in the 41st Infantry Division. Lorne was employed at the Cherokee Mental Health for 35 years. He enjoyed working with his co-workers and patients. During his employment he received the Governor’s State Top Achievement Recognition (STAR) Award for his dedication and commitment to public service.
Lorne and his wife lived on a small acreage outside of Aurelia where they raised their three daughters Amy, Lori, and Jenny. Lorne lived life as an adventure; he could have fun doing anything. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He appreciated nature and loved fishing, hunting for antiques, history, and working on projects.
Lorne died Thursday, April 3, 2014, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa; he was a cancer survivor of 13 years.
Preceding Lorne in death were his parents.
Survivors include his wife Christine, three daughters; Amy and her husband Dan Skogman of Hinton, Lori Gano of Dakota Dunes, SD, and her fiancé Kent Ohlson of Aurelia, and Jenny and her husband Jon Cody of Springfield, MO, and five grandchildren; Kelsey, Tayler, Jordan, Daiton, and Elaina. Also surviving are his brother, Larry and his wife Suzi Gano of Hemphill, TX, and two sisters; Peg and her husband Jesse Fastenow of Peterson, and Polly and her husband Bruce Rapp of Aurelia, father-in-law and mother-in-law, Cliff and Catherine Bonham of Aurelia, brother-in-law, Dave and his wife Andi Bonham of Pierre, SD, sister-in-law, Sue Ellen Bonham of Marcus, IA, brother-in-law Dan and his wife Penny Bonham of Marathon, IA, sister-in-law Carri and her husband Rich Eckert of Aurelia, many beloved nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.
