Funeral services for Gordon “Gordy” Grohe, 80, of Aurelia will be 10:30 A.M. Saturday, November 2, 2013, at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Cherokee with Pastor Jane Johnston officiating. Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Cherokee. Visitation will be Friday from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M., with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00, at the Aurelia Community Center. The Redig Funeral Home in Aurelia is in charge of arrangements.

Gordon Walter Grohe was born on August 12, 1933, the son of Walter and Freida (Olhausen) Grohe in Storm Lake, IA. He graduated from the Storm Lake High School in 1951. On March 3, 1952 Gordy was united in marriage to Nona Peterson at the Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake. They had three children; Susan, Michael, and Kelli. Gordy and Nona lived on a farm where he worked for Cliff Bruce for two years. They then moved to Cherokee where he was on the Cherokee Police force and then was a deputy sheriff for three years. Gordy was a car salesman for Peterson Motors in Cherokee for 31 years. Later he worked for the Cherokee County Law Enforcement Center for 19 years, retiring in 2001. He also owned and operated Gordy’s Hamburger Shop in Cherokee and Aurelia. He mowed lawns for 25 years, which he enjoyed very much.

Gordy was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, he served as Mayor of Aurelia from January 1, 1988 until December 31, 1991, and on the board of the Aurelia Municipal Electric from February 2003 until the present. Gordy and Nona had many Yorkie and Schnauzer dogs over the years, and he enjoyed golfing, bowling, and snowmobiling.

Gordy died Wednesday, October 30, 2013, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake, IA.

Preceding Gordy in death were his parents, his son Mike, and his sister, Beverly Harriott.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Nona, his children; Sue Roberts, and Kelli and her husband Steve Hirschman all of Aurelia. Also surviving are nine grandchildren; Stacy and husband Mike McGee of Cherokee, Adam and wife Dawn Roberts of Marcus, Christi Grohe of Des Moines, Wesly Grohe and special friend Danielle Lewis of Cherokee, Toby Grohe of Quimby, Taylor Grohe of Ocheydan, Kati and husband Brian Gorman of Ames, Amy and husband Nate Lewis of Aurelia, and Nick Hirschman of Ames. Also surviving are 14 great-grandchildren; Breanna, Emilee, and Kaleb McGee, Sydney, Jocee, and Mason Roberts, Izik, Tate, and Gage Piercy, Parker Michael Grohe and Devontez Grohe, Ella Gorman, and Coy and Bryn Lewis, one brother, Ronald and wife Glenna Grohe of Des Moines, one brother-in-law, Don Harriott of Helena, Montana, nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.
