CarlsonnewsFuneral services for Doris J. Carlson, 83, of Aurelia, will be Friday, January 31, 2014, at 10:30 A.M., at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Aurelia, with Pastor Larry Lemke officiating. Burial will be in the Memory Gardens Cemetery in Cherokee. Visitation will be Thursday from 5:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M., with the family present, at the church. A memorial fund has been established. The Redig Funeral Home in Aurelia was in charge of arrangements.

Doris Jean Joy was born on February 24, 1930 at Correctionville, IA, the daughter of Loren and Mildred (Perkins) Joy.  She graduated from the Correctionville High School in 1947. On May 2, 1948 Doris married Clifford Carlson at the Trinity Lutheran Church parsonage in Cherokee. They made their home in several towns in Cherokee County, at Early, and moved to Aurelia in 1973. Her life centered around her community, church, and family. She was part of Federated Women’s Club and Community Kitchen Band, and regularly attended the Aurelia Community Coffee. She was actively involved with Women of the World, Lutheran Women’s Missionary League and Lutheran’s for Life, taught Sunday school and led Bible studies and she faithfully participated in Bible study groups until the last few weeks of her life. Doris gave 25 years of her life serving at Sunset Knoll Retirement Home and Sunset Knoll Auxiliary. She enjoyed music, was an avid reader, worked crossword puzzles daily and enjoyed a good game of solitaire. She liked to watch dancing and ice skating programs, playing cards and games with her family and in her later years discussing American politics. She was the most enthusiastic fan at all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s sports activities and events. She loved cooking and baking and serving her family which she did into her later years. She deeply loved her family and expressed often her gratefulness for the husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren the Lord had given her.

Doris died Monday, January 27, 2014 at the Cherokee Regional Medical Center in Cherokee.

Preceding Doris in death were her parents, one son, Ricky Carlson, and one niece, Cindy Carlson.

Survivors include her husband Clifford of Aurelia, three sons; Loren and his wife Cheryl Carlson of Storm Lake, Terry and his wife Kathy Carlson of Washington, IL, Randy and his wife Lynn Carlson of Waukee, IA, and one daughter, Dee and her husband Curt Otto of Holstein. Also surviving are eight grandchildren; Brandt and wife Nicky Carlson, Linsay and husband Simeon Vladimirov, Gabriel and wife Kendra Carlson, Jordan and wife Courtney Carlson, Joshua and wife Heather Carlson, Brandon and wife Deidre Carlson, Matthew and wife Allie Otto, and Kelly and wife Abbie Otto, nine great-grandchildren; Jaxson and Owen Otto, Dillon, Adelaide, Myra, and Hayden Carlson, Kaylie and Elyse Carlson, and Ary Carlson, two sisters; Donna and husband Ron Conley and Diane and husband Darrell Wieland all of Cherokee, other relatives and friends.
