Mass of the Christian Burial services for Dr. Edmund R. McGuire, D.V.M., 72, of Cherokee will be 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, May 30, 2017, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cherokee, with Father Dan Guenther officiating. Interment will be in the Afton Township Cemetery, rural Cherokee. Visitation will be Monday from 5:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M., with a Parish Rosary service at 7:00, at the First United Methodist Church in Aurelia. The Redig Funeral Home in Aurelia is in charge of arrangements.

Ed died Thursday, May 25, 2017, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa.

Edmund Raymond McGuire was born on November 30, 1944, in Bancroft, IA, the son of Charles and Charlotte (Hood) McGuire. He attended St. John Catholic School in Bancroft, graduating in 1963. Ed attended Iowa State University and became a veterinarian. In 1967 Ed married Jean Karels, they divorced in 1982. After becoming a DVM, he practiced at the Fairmont Veterinary Clinic in Fairmont, MN, and in Swea City, IA. On March 19, 1983 Ed married Jessie Rees at Hanover. From 1972 to 2006 Ed was a federal veterinarian for the USDA. His most recent position was that of consultant to Siouxpreme Pack. He retired from that position in 2014.

Since his retirement Ed has continued his lifelong interests of gardening, caring for animals, and woodworking on his acreage northeast of Cherokee. Other interest included genealogy, his grandchildren’s activities, travel, and his dog Shay.

Preceding Ed in death are his parents, an infant daughter, Samantha, one brother, John McGuire, one sister, Patricia Colleen, three brothers-in-law; Don Degen, Stephen Brandenburg, and Thomas Rees, and one sister-in-law, Barbara McGuire.

Surviving Ed are his wife Jessie of Cherokee, two sons; Michael McGuire of Backus, MN, and Chad and his wife Peggy McGuire of Sioux Falls, SD, and one daughter, Jill and her husband Ryan Johnson of Sioux Falls, five grandchildren; Samantha and Abilene McGuire, Margaret McGuire, Evan and Carson Johnson, two step-children; JoEllen and her husband Fred Yohnke of Ida Grove, and Bradley and his wife Joni Betts of Sioux City, four step-grandchildren; Dr. Jessica Albers, Matthew Jensen, and Paige and Jordan Betts. Also surviving are four brothers; William and wife Ann of Green Valley, AZ, Thomas and wife Cheryl of Lake in the Hills, IL, Martin of Algona, IA, and Joseph and wife Carolyn of State Center, IA, three sisters, Ann Degen of Bancroft, Mary and husband Don Schiltz of Estherville, IA, and Kristin Brandenburg of Armstrong, IA, one sister-in-law, Patricia McGuire of Algona, IA, and many nieces and nephews, and other relatives and friends.
